Watt to dBm converter

The Watt to dBm converter allows you to transform a power expressed in watts into a value in dBm (decibels-milliwatts).
This calculation is widely used in the RF, microwave and telecommunications fields to compare signal power levels.

W

Formula used

dBm = 10 × log₁₀(P × 1000)

Or :
P = power in watts
dBm = power expressed in decibels-milliwatts

Explanation

The formula converts the power of an electrical signal from watts to dBm.
Since 1 watt is equal to 1000 milliwatts, we multiply the power by 1000 before calculating the logarithm to base 10.
The result represents the power level in dBm, a convenient logarithmic unit for expressing power ratios.

Calculation example

If the power P is 0.05 W :

dBm = 10 × log₁₀(0.05 × 1000) = 10 × log₁₀(50) ≈ 16.99 dBm

Benefits and Use

  • Easily converts power to a standardized logarithmic scale.
  • Used by RF engineers to evaluate signal levels and power losses.
  • Essential for the design of wireless systems, radio networks and measuring devices.
  • Facilitates the comparison of very different powers on the same scale.
