Reflectance calculator – reflection coefficient calculator

Reflectance calculator – reflection coefficient calculator

This calculator determines the reflection coefficient of an RF circuit or transmission line from the load impedance (ZL) and the characteristic impedance (Z0). It makes it possible to evaluate the quality of adaptation and the quantity of energy reflected towards the source.

Ideal for RF engineers, lab technicians and circuit designers working on antennas, filters or impedance matching networks.

Formula

Γ = (ZL – Z0) / (ZL + Z0)

Explanation of the formula

  • ZL is the impedance of the load connected to the transmission line.
  • Z0 is the characteristic impedance of the line (usually 50 Ω).
  • The ratio (ZL – Z0) / (ZL + Z0) indicates the proportion of the reflected signal.
  • A reflection coefficient close to 0 means excellent fit, while a value close to 1 indicates strong reflection.

Example: Reflection coefficient for ZL = 75 Ω and Z0 = 50 Ω

Input : ZL = 75 Ω, Z0 = 50 Ω

Output : Γ = 0.2

Benefits and uses

  • Allows you to check the impedance matching between antennas and cables.
  • Helps reduce losses due to reflections in RF systems.
  • Essential tool for performance testing of coaxial lines and matching circuits.
  • Improves the accuracy of telecommunications and microwave designs.
