The Star-Delta calculator allows you to easily convert resistors from a star arrangement (Wye/Star) to a triangle arrangement (Delta).
This tool is useful for engineers and technicians working on electrical or electronic circuits where network transformations are necessary.
Formula used
Ra = R1 + R2 + (R1 × R2) / R3
Rb = R2 + R3 + (R2 × R3) / R1
Rc = R1 + R3 + (R1 × R3) / R2
Or :
R1, R2, R3 = star circuit resistances (Ω, MΩ)
Ra, Rb, Rc = corresponding resistances of the triangle circuit (Ω)
Explanation
Each resistance of the triangle is calculated from the resistances of the star by adding the two adjacent resistances and adding the product of these two resistances divided by the opposite resistance.
This method ensures that the total resistance between each pair of terminals remains equivalent between the two types of mounting.
Calculation example
For a star assembly with:
R1 = 10 Ω , R2 = 20 Ω , R3 = 30 Ω :
Ra = 10 + 20 + (10 × 20)/30 = 50 Ω
Rb = 20 + 30 + (20 × 30)/10 = 110 Ω
Rc = 10 + 30 + (10 × 30)/20 = 55 Ω
Benefits and Use
- Allows you to quickly convert resistors between star and delta arrangements.
- Useful for three-phase circuit analysis and component sizing.
- Helps simplify network calculations and verify equivalence between different mounting types.
